Teaching English to speakers of other languages can be a highly rewarding career, offering you the chance to live and work in different countries. You will need an internationally recognised teaching qualification. The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is highly regarded throughout the world.

CELTA is an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience and opens up a whole world of exciting teaching opportunities. Because it is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the world-famous University of Cambridge, you can rely on its quality and recognition. More than 12,000 people successfully complete a CELTA course each year.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants should be at least 20 years of age, educated to A-level standard or the equivalent, with qualifications that would allow access to a university degree. Your spoken and written English should be of a high standard, at least C1 in the Common European Framework.

Applications must be made at least 4 weeks before the course is due to start and all applicants must complete a pre-interview task and an interview with the Academic Director.

What is this course?

TEFL is highly regulated in the UK and Ireland. To work in an official language school, teachers need a relevant qualification that includes real life teaching practice. The CELTA qualification meets all the criteria sought by accrediting bodies. In fact, CELTA is the benchmark certificate-level TEFL qualification. The course is suitable for people who …

  • want to work in TEFL
  • already work in TEFL but who need a solid teaching qualification
  • require a solid grounding in teaching methods and the language syllabus
  • want an internationally recognized qualification

Main Topics

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course.

Assessment

There are two components of assessment:

Teaching Practice: You will teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours.

Written Assignments: You will complete four written assignments: one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English; one on language skills; and one on classroom teaching. To be awarded the Certificate, you must pass both components. There are three passing grades ? Pass, Pass ?B? and Pass ?A?

Testimonials

Before deciding to complete my CELTA qualification, I had been fortunate enough to have had some English teaching experience both in Manchester and in Derry, and this gave me a real taste for education and language learning. After doing some research and talking to previous CELTA students, I decided to apply for the course, and I can honestly say it was the best academic decision I have ever made.

Having been advised beforehand of the intensity of the four week course, I knew that it would be a challenge and would require great focus and organisation, but we couldn’t have had better support. Both trainers were so generous with their time, and their commitment to our student group and to the course was so apparent in the perfectly structured timetable and the abundance of extra notes and pointers they provided us with every day.

It is bizarre how a group of strangers can become a little family in four short weeks, but the combination of hard work, peer support and fun brought us all together, with the whole group passing the course!Since completion, I have been working in Foyle International as an English teacher, and the techniques and skills that I gained from the CELTA have been incomparable – my lessons are efficient and successful and I know that my employment opportunities are much greater now.

As for location, the school is right in the centre of the city just inside Derry’s walls, and if you find that you have some free time to spend outside of course hours, you can submerge yourself in this wonderfully cultural and historical city, while getting to know the friendly locals.I honestly couldn’t recommend the CELTA course enough – it really is your ticket to the rest of the world!

We undertook the CELTA course at Foyle International a year apart to suit our different timetables, but with the same goal in mind: to give ourselves an option of an alternative career with new challenges as we edge towards the end of our working life.

The course was challenging, comprehensive and very busy, but also engaging and a lot of fun. Each course had about 9 -12 students on it (with us being at the top end of the age range in both!).  In the groups we shared our highs and lows, supported each other and became a ‘CELTA family’ for those important weeks.

I found the tutors helpful, friendly and well prepared for each session, but there was also a standard to be reached which was immutable. The teaching practices and assignments were daunting, new skills were learned and others unlearned, but all requirements were eventually achieved, and we received our shiny new CELTA certificates declaring us ready to teach English.

This year we are teaching English in a small language school in Sicily and are very happy here. The classes are small, students are interested, company is fun, and the island is beautiful. Four weeks of long hours and hard work are a small price to pay for such an experience!

I would highly recommend studying the CELTA in Derry at Foyle International to anyone who is either already working in TEFL, or who wants to get into English teaching. I had already taught English in Korea for seven years before doing the CELTA, but the course was really beneficial to me in terms of getting me to really think about how my lessons could be designed to benefit learners in the best way possible.

The course fits a lot into a four week period, and this really pushes you to deepen your understanding of teaching methods as you try to implement what you’ve been learning in lessons with foreign students who are living or staying in Derry. I enjoyed the atmosphere at the school and my interactions with my course tutors, classmates and foreign students, and there’s no doubt the course has helped me a great amount professionally as I continue to work as a teacher and teacher trainer.

Walking into Foyle International on the first day of the CELTA course was both a daunting and an exciting moment. I had been warned about the intensity of CELTA, and it truly was a whirlwind four weeks.  However, within that short four-week period, I gained a plethora of new skills, as well as invaluable experience in both the theoretical and practical aspects of ESL teaching.  Juggling observed teaching practices, methodology lessons, and assignments is challenging, but at Foyle International the wonderful trainers, staff, and facilities make it a lot more manageable.  The trainers are always on hand to provide support and guidance, and because of their wealth of knowledge and experience, I would highly recommend the CELTA course at Foyle International. I personally left the CELTA course with the knowledge, practical experience, and confidence to pursue a career in the world of ESL teaching, and am taking advantage of the travel opportunities which come along with it.

I completed my CELTA course at Foyle International in August 2014 and I can’t recommend it enough.

Whatever you put into the course, you get out of it. Long days, late nights and tight deadlines was the name of the game. In saying that there was never a time that I didn’t feel supported by either our trainers Kelley and Chris or my peers. Feedback and guidance never stopped and I cannot stress enough how apparent it was from day one that we were in the hands of two very capable individuals (Kelley and Chris) who really believed in the work of language education and all of its challenges and recompenses.
Beyond the trainers, the school’s location in the heart of Derry allowed for a diverse student body during the practical parts of our course.  I was able to interact with and teach international students with a multitude of needs, which was a priceless experience for such an early stage in my teaching career.

Since completing my CELTA course I have taught in Italy, Greece and last year I  returned back to where it all started, Foyle International. I found my CELTA course to be a  true investment in my teaching career and future.”

CELTA has changed my life forever. Although I was already a qualified senior teacher (Graduation, MA and PhD), having this Cambridge certificate has refreshed my methods and teaching practice, not to mention the fact that it has opened the doors of the world for me. CELTA is recognised worldwide and got me a place with International House Pamplona (Spain), International House Portugal, British Council Portugal, Wall Street Institute and several other schools throughout the years. It’s a certificate that does make a difference!

If you want to go further on your teaching career, hand in hand with highly professional tutors and trainers, a wonderful teaching environment and fantastic social activities, then Foyle International – Derry – NI is the right place for you! I loved it and I thank my tutors, the school and my peers from the bottom of my heart! Keep up with your amazing work!
